March News – Selling Trees

When thinking about fraud in the timber industry we tend to focus on the actual timber sales process but tend to forget the theft to the landowners themselves. This is especially a problem when the landowners are elderly and/or are not practiced in business contracting and prefer to work with a promise and a handshake. A recent article I read about two timber buying companies in Iowa brought up the plight of some unsuspecting landowners. In this article the courts intervened in the purchasing process to require that the companies in question reform their business practices after complaints from elderly rural property owners.
